For generations, St. Charles, Missouri has proudly celebrated and documented its deep
German, French, and early pioneer heritage. While these narratives are foundational to our
history, they represent only part of the tapestry that built our community.
I am deeply honored to announce a milestone that expands this narrative: the St. Charles
County Historical Society has officially invited my “Wall of Firsts” research into the pages of
Heritage—the county’s most prestigious quarterly scholarly journal.
Beginning with the July 4th issue, this multi-issue series will document the lives, sacrifices, and
achievements of more than 47 African American pioneers who helped shape St. Charles County
over its rich 250-year history. As a peer-reviewed scholarly publication, Heritage provides a
rigorous academic platform to ensure these vital stories are permanently preserved with the
precision, accuracy, and structural integrity they deserve in our official historical record.
Beyond Recycling the Past: A Dedicated Commitment
Historically, when Black history is highlighted locally, it is often compressed into a single month.
Every February, our institutions tend to recycle the same few familiar names. While those
individuals absolutely deserve recognition, I went looking deeper.
My archival investigation uncovered 47 distinct African American firsts and civic pioneers who
broke barriers, built businesses, engineered solutions, and steered community growth. Until
now, these stories have never been assembled in one place, with this degree of depth, for the
academic record.
What makes this upcoming Heritage series distinct is its structural format. Rather than a
one-time feature, this represents a dedicated, ongoing, multi-issue editorial commitment. We are
not just writing an article; we are updating the historical ledger.

The First Chapter: “The Road to Education”
The inaugural entry in this historic series is titled “The Road to Education: The High School
Bus Pilgrimage.” Appearing in the upcoming issue, this article unpacks the profound sacrifices
and logistics undertaken by Black families in St. Charles County simply to secure a high school
education during segregation.
This research would not be possible without an active partnership. I want to extend my sincere
gratitude to Heritage editor Bob Brown and Archivist Amy Haake at the St. Charles County
Historical Society. Their collaboration, open doors, and archival support have been instrumental
in transforming these scattered primary documents into cohesive historical records.
A Unified Future Requires an Accurate Past
The ultimate objective of the “Wall of Firsts” initiative is to ensure that these documented lives
are permanently woven into the broader educational infrastructure. This publication in Heritage
marks a critical first step, but the path forward extends much further. These stories belong in the
Missouri State Archives, our local public library branches, and school district curriculums.
You cannot build a unified future without an accurate past. By preserving these names, we
ensure that future generations walk through St. Charles with a complete understanding of the
diverse leadership that cleared the path before them.
